Genre defying monolithic metal heaviness. All they know is – they’ve come to destroy!

GUITARISTS: Doug ‘Snake Sustaine’ Sabolick, Rob Carpenter

Who are they and what do they sound like?
Take your Rocky montages with your cream cheese spread and stick them where the sun don’t shine, Philadelphia has some new heroes. They go by the name of A Life Once Lost and they’re pioneering the future in DIY metal. Destroying venues across America continuously, there’s been no let up in their steaming efforts. Injecting a punk rock swagger into an intense barrage of pent up polyrhythms and vicious deathcore. Tech metal? Who knows. Guitarist Doug Sabolick ponders: “I guess we’ll always be labelled that, but it’s no problem. I’d classify our shit now as: smoking bong rock metal! Just look for that section in the record store”.

It’s a brutal sound, it must’ve taken years to get this unruly?
“Well my dad is a raging piano player, and I had a guitar in my hands by the time I was like 5. I couldn’t really press the strings, but I definitely fucked around with it!” Laughs Doug. “I wouldn’t say I’m particularly influenced by many metal guitarists anymore either; right now it’s all about Ted Nugent and Ace Frehley!””.

With respect from bands like Lamb Of God, it appears there’s a lot of love for these guys…
“We’re definitely respected by other bands, but that doesn’t mean we’re successful. Although we’re going on tour with the Dillinger Escape Plan, and that’s something we wouldn’t get if we weren’t respected by other bands. So it’s good in that way! Actually we wanted to record this album [Iron Gag] with Devin Townshend, `cos we became great friends with him at Ozzfest and he just liked our DIY attitude. It would’ve been good, but the money wasn’t there.” Says Doug. “Devin did lay a solo down on the new record though; he wanted to be a part of it!”

Looks like things are really looking up, what’s next for the band?
“We don’t care about being this or that, we’re not gonna be the next Metallica or anything. We just think we’ve put out a fucking kick ass metal rock album, and it fucking destroys a lot of albums by people who think they’re the shit. We produced the album ourselves too, so we’ll take it as far as having some bragging rights!”
