ALBUM REVIEW: BULLETS & OCTANE – ‘SONG FOR THE UNDERDOG’

Album review previously published in TOTAL GUITAR magazine in 2007.

BULLETS AND OCTANE
Song For The Underdog (ARES Records)

TG Rating: 3/5

What’s this?
A swift return from LA’s latest tattoo’s. In The Mouth Of The Young turned heads with it’s balls-out sweat infested rock n roll in 2006, and though they still have all the lyrical clichés of whiskey, drugs and insane sluts, something has drastically altered in their music on this new release…

Any good?
Matured songwriting akin to Against Me! leaves Gene’s lyrical prowess coming across largely naïve, but the huge modification in sound is positive. Songs bounce around in a summery pop punk fashion, with triumphant choruses straight out of a Foo Fighters tribute album that’s spent a month on a sunbed!

In five words: New mellow sound with cocktails
